A. Lange und Söhne and Patek Philippe Face Off

The A. Lange und Söhne Minute Repeater Perpetual 607.091FE is Lange's most important complication this year. Its release signals the renewed head-to-head competition between Lange and Patek Philippe. Minute repeaters are common; perpetual calendars are even more common. The combination of a minute repeater and a perpetual calendar on a single watch is extremely rare (note: this refers to a combination of two functions, not three or five). Currently, the only minute repeater and perpetual calendar available on the market is the Patek Philippe Ref. 5374. The A. Lange & Söhne Saxony Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar is clearly a direct competitor to the Patek Philippe Ref. 5374.

The A. Lange und Söhne Minute Repeater Perpetual 607.091FE platinum case measures 40.5 mm and is 12.1 mm thick. It has a size advantage over its counterpart, the Patek Philippe 5374 (42 mm and 12.28 mm thick).  The enamel dial (18K gold dial) uses the traditional perpetual calendar layout with multiple small dials. But it must be pointed out that on this watch, Lange's perpetual calendar layout has reached perfection, with both Lange's iconic large calendar and the absolute balance of the perpetual calendar.

At 12 o'clock is a large double-window date, at 3 o'clock are the month and leap year; at 9 o'clock are the day of the week and 24-hour display; and at 6 o'clock are the small seconds and moon phases. Unlike previous Lange perpetual calendars, which had separate subdials for the leap year and 24-hour day/night indications, these are now fully integrated into the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, which I personally think looks better. As a subtle detail, the stars on the moon phase disc are hand-engraved.

A subtle yet impressive feature of this watch is its 20-meter water resistance. Minute repeaters are very difficult to achieve water resistance due to the pushers (or buttons) that activate them. Officially labeling a 20-meter water resistance rating is quite rare (for example, to ensure it's water-resistant against hand washing and splashes). Watches like Patek Philippe simply indicate that it's not water-resistant. The perpetual calendar is also adjusted using a hidden button on the side of the case.

The reason why the A. Lange und Söhne Minute Repeater Perpetual 607.091FE is smaller and thinner than the Patek Philippe 5374 is mainly due to the L122.2 movement.
